Footage of a fast-thinking pedestrian who brings her friend to safety at the last second when an out-of-control SUV crashes into a nearby hotel.
The video footage from the lobby of the Shengzhou Imperial Grand Hotel in Zhejiang Province in eastern China shows the moment when the two women narrowly escaped the potentially fatal incident on Tuesday.
The girlfriends can be seen outside the hotel’s east entrance as the vehicle, driven by a man identified only by his last name Yu, speeds toward them at 8:15 pm local time.
A friend spots the black SUV and pulls her friend to safety. The couple then fall backwards as Yu’s car is driven up the stairs and crashes into a parked limousine and the glass doors of the hotel, as the video shows.
The video from the surveillance camera shows three other hotel guests who were also able to avoid the impact within seconds. They got into an elevator just as Yu’s car smashed the hotel’s glass doors and came to a halt against a concrete wall.
A member of staff on duty, who was sitting in the lobby, managed to avoid the debris and was also unhurt, as the clip shows.
Videos distributed on the Chinese social media platforms Weibo and WeChat show Yu, who was apparently unconscious in the driver’s seat of his car after the accident.
The front of his SUV seemed to have been severely damaged during the high-speed crash and was filmed when he was dragged away from the scene of the accident.
Shengzhou traffic police said they came to find Yu unconscious in the driver’s seat, but it was not immediately clear whether his condition was a result of the accident.
Apart from the driver himself, no other people were injured, the local authorities said in an online statement.
The police said that Yu did not have a driver’s license and was cleared of suspected drunk driving.
He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but will later be arrested for driving without a license among other things, the statement said.
At the time of writing, it was unclear what could have caused Yu to lose control of his car.
The liability determined by the resulting investigation will determine how much Yu will have to pay to the institution as compensation.
