Several stunning movies depicting Thursday’s “ring of fire” solar eclipse have been shared on social media, including one uploaded by Storyful on YouTube from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
When the moon passes between the sun and our planet, a solar eclipse occurs, casting a shadow on Earth.
In some portions of Canada, as well as Greenland and northern Russia, a total eclipse with a “ring of fire” might be witnessed.
The most recent video, taken at the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s Sudbury Centre by Luc Boulard, showed a partial eclipse, with a blazing crescent-shaped sun burning brilliantly as it appears to grow larger against a pitch-black sky.
When the sun, moon, and Earth are not perfectly aligned, a partial eclipse occurs. According to NASA, the sun will appear to have a dark shadow on only a portion of its surface.
Viewers across much of Canada, the eastern United States, and northern Alaska were able to enjoy a partial eclipse on Thursday in North America.
Parts of the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and northern Africa saw a partial eclipse as well.
“During an annular eclipse, the moon is far enough away from Earth that it appears smaller in the sky than the sun,” NASA adds.
“Because the moon does not completely obscure the sun’s vision, it will seem as a dark disk on top of a bigger, bright disk. This results in what appears to be a ring of fire surrounding the moon,” it continues.
Every 18 months, a solar eclipse can be seen from anywhere on Earth. In the twenty-first century, there will be 224 solar eclipses, including six complete eclipses in the 2020s.
On October 14, 2023, there will be another annular eclipse. It will be visible from parts of the western regions of the U.S. as well as Central America, Colombia and Brazil.
An annular eclipse is different from a total solar eclipse, during which the moon totally blocks the sun out of view from Earth.
