An errant elevator bolts up 30 floors, killing a teen girl inside.
Last weekend, a teen girl was killed when a suspected faulty elevator shot up 30 floors and struck the top of her apartment building, according to officials in southern China.
According to Shanghai news portal The Paper on Wednesday, the victim was a high school student who was one week away from taking her national college exams.
The passenger became trapped inside the elevator when it stopped between the first floor and basement level 1 at 7:39 p.m. local time on Sunday, according to a statement released by the office for industry and commerce in Zhanjiang, a coastal city in the province of Guangdong.
A maintenance worker was dispatched to the Jinhai Bay residential neighborhood in Chikan District after the teenager called a family member. According to a government statement released Monday, as the worker began manually opening the elevator doors, the car suddenly shot upward, traveling at high speed until it struck the top of the elevator shaft.
After being taken to a local hospital, she was pronounced dead, according to the notice. At the time of publication, the cause of her death had not been revealed. The victim was rescued from the 30th floor after an hour, according to the paper.
The incident is believed to have occurred due to a malfunction of the elevator’s braking mechanism, according to the government office. A task force has been formed to investigate the incident.
Shenyang Brilliant Elevator Co. Ltd. (BLT), according to the statement, was the supplier who provided the equipment to the Jinhai Bay developer. The maintenance worker was hired by a third party, and it is unlikely that his attempts to open the elevator doors caused the brake failure.
According to the report, there were 24 BLT lifts located throughout the residential area. The equipment is considered new because it has been in use since 2014.
Residents told the website that the lifts had been malfunctioning on several occasions, including unexplained stalling, but nothing serious. This is a brief summary.
