After repaying a $16 million debt, Iran regains its right to vote in the UN General Assembly.

After clearing a $16 million debt, Iran recovered its right to vote in the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.

According to Reuters, UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said on Friday that Iran had paid the minimum amount owed.

Iran’s UN Ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi tweeted shortly after Haq’s remarks, saying, “Illegal US sanctions have not only denied our people of medicine; they have also prevented Iran from paying our dues in arrears to the UN.”

Illegal US sanctions have not only denied our people access to medicine, but they have also prohibited Iran from paying its UN dues.

The UN today announced that it has received the funding after more than six months of work.

“The UN today declared that it had received the funding after more than six months of work. “ALL barbaric sanctions must be lifted IMMEDIATELY,” read the tweet.

Iran’s UN General Assembly voting rights were removed in January after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres revealed that Iran owes the UN $16.2 million in fines. In response, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that money intended for UN payments had been stopped in South Korean institutions due to US sanctions.

After President Donald Trump withdrew from a 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, the United States sanctioned Iran in 2018.

On June 2, Guterres wrote to UN General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir, warning that Iran’s voting rights in the General Assembly would be revoked due to its debt. In the letter, Guterres stated that Iran would be allowed the right to vote again if it paid a minimum of $16,251,298.

In response to Guterres, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Javad Zarif wrote a letter where he said, “I am writing to convey our strong dismay over the announcement that the Islamic Republic of Iran will lose its voting privileges in the United Nations General Assembly due to the arrears in the payment of its financial contribution to the United Nations.”
