Viewers were convinced that Michael Che and other Saturday Night Live performers were drunk on air during the first episode after the 2020 election.
The episode’s “weekend update” feature began with Colin Jost distributing clips of people celebrating President Donald Trump’s defeat of President-Elect Joe Biden in the U.S. and abroad.
And it seemed that some members of the SNL attended the celebrations, with Che apparently enjoying whiskey during the segment.
“Trump has reportedly told allies that he must be kicked out of the White House and dragged out of the White House screaming… Good! said Che before shrugging his shoulders and taking a sip of his drink.
Che then thought about his feelings after Biden’s victory and said that everything he was worried or angry about had “kind of faded away”.
He continued, “The problems are still there, but remember the Shawshank scene when the guys on the roof were drinking beer? They were still in prison, but for one day everything felt good. That’s how I feel now!”
Moments later Che tore off his tie and said to Jost: “Hey Colin, did you know that my tie is clip-on?”
“I’ve wanted to say that all year,” he added, while Jost burst out laughing.
The post, as well as other cases where the actors hurt their characters and Dave Chappelle smoked a cigarette during his opening monologue, led to many calls on Twitter, where Che’s name was in vogue early Sunday morning.

Alisha Grauso said that Che and other actors “went crazy with joy” when Trump was defeated.
“Michael Che just drank during the weekend update and everyone broke – the entire SNL cast went crazy with joy tonight,” Grauso wrote. “The sketches weren’t even that solid, it’s just the pure dizziness vibrating through the screen that I love.
Frazier Tharpe added: “The entire cast of the SNL performed, just as they stumbled into work today after Moët’s railing in Washington Square Park, good for them.
Another person added: “The SNL is wild tonight lmaooo, Dave Chapelle just smoked a cigarette on stage, Michael Che is drunk, they don’t care.
“Michael Che was driven by Henny in this whole skit,” another person joked.
