Victim Brutally Beaten, Called Homophobic Slurs: GoFundMe Raises $39k for Victim Brutally Beaten, Called Homophobic Slurs

In just one day, a GoFundMe page set up for a Canadian man who was attacked and yelled homophobic slurs generated more than $39,000.

Cianan Liburd set up the page on behalf of David Gomez, who was assaulted on June 5 near Hanlan’s Point in Toronto. Gomez was characterized as “a valuable and loved part of our Queer community” on the page.

More than $39,000 has been raised for Gomez on the site at the time of publication.

“The attack knocked David out for a while, and when he recovered, he discovered his nose was broken, cheekbone and orbital bone shattered, a splint in his hip bone, and a concussion,” according to the GoFundMe page.

According to the post, Gomez is healing from the attack and will require additional surgery. Therapy, legal fees, school expenses, and medical expenditures will be covered by the funds earned through GoFundMe.

“It’s maddening to think that even during PRIDE MONTH, we still have to watch our backs in places like Hanlan’s, which has functioned as an enclave and safe haven for the queer community for as long as some of us can remember,” the page stated.

Gomez told CBC News that he was the victim of the incident and that he shared images of his injuries with them.

According to the CBC, social media posts claimed that Chris Larsen of the Ottawa Redblacks was engaged in the incident. Larsen has been banned and an investigation has been begun by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, the football team’s parent corporation.

The aggravated attack at Hanlan’s Point is being investigated by the Toronto Police Service, which includes the force’s hate crime section.

A 24-year-old male and a 27-year-old woman were walking to the ferry docks when they became involved in a quarrel with a group of individuals, according to a news release from the service.

According to authorities, a male in the group made homphobic statements, and a lady in the group seized one of the victims. Two men from the group then “assaulted the 24-year-old man by punching and kicking him, leaving him with significant injuries.”

The police provided descriptions of three suspects.

The first suspect was described as a Black man between 25 and 32 years old with dreadlocks. Police said he weighs about 220 pounds, stands at 6 feet, 4. This is a brief summary.
