Speaking Wednesday, President Donald Trump said that the investigators who “didn’t catch me” in Washington, D.C. are now sending information to investigators in New York as part of an ongoing effort to bring “us” down.
The president’s comments on the ongoing investigation came in the middle of a 46-minute video address shown on his social media platforms on Wednesday. The speech focused primarily on the election fraud allegations, which have been largely refuted, but also touched on the investigation Trump was undergoing in the nation’s capital and in his hometown.
While the U.S. Senate acquitted Trump earlier this year of two impeachment allegations that had been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives, separate investigations are still underway in New York.
“I have heard that the same people who were unable to reach me in Washington have sent all the information to New York so that they can try to get me there,” Trump said. “It’s all been looked over. Over and over again.”
Trump criticized Robert Mueller, who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections, and John Durham, who is involved in the ongoing investigation into the origin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Russia investigation.
“Robert Mueller spent $48 million of taxpayers’ money over two and a half years investigating me, issued over 2,800 subpoenas, executed nearly 500 search warrants, issued 230 communications recording orders and conducted 500 witness interviews, all of which were aimed at bringing me down,” Trump said. “In the end, there was no collusion. None at all.”
Trump briefly mentioned Letitia James, the New York Attorney General, who told Spectrum News in early November that the New York investigation into the Trump organization would continue whether or not Trump would win reelection. According to an Associated Press report last month, the legal investigation Trump is facing in New York could continue long after he resigned on January 20.
Trump, who has not yet turned in the presidential election despite major broadcasters declaring the race for Joe Biden on November 7, said investigators are determined to continue their work “anywhere else” where they can find traction.
“All there has been so far is a big investigation in Washington and New York and any other place that can investigate, because that’s what they want to do: They want to bring us down, not me, but us. And we can never let that happen,” Trump said.
Washington Newsday asked James for a comment, but did not receive a response in time for publication.
The President then turned his attention to Durham, whom U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr first appointed in May 2019 and only recently, earlier this week, as special advisor to the same investigation.
“We caught Comey cold, we caught McCabe cold, we caught them all,” Trump said, referring to former FBI Director James Comey and Andrew McCabe, the former acting FBI Director after Casey’s release.
“They can hound me all they want before the election, but unfortunately Mr. Durham did not want to hound these people or have anything to do with hounding them before the election. So who knows if he will ever file a report. But when you look at the lies and the leaks and the illegal actions and behavior of so many people in their desire to harm the President of the United States, something should be done”.
