On Wednesday, Democratic MEP Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez presented a new series of articles on her campaign website.
Among the set were three T-shirts and a navy blue sweatshirt with the slogan “Tax the Rich” written in bold white letters on the chest.
At a hefty price tag of $58 a piece, many resorted to Twitter to ridicule the democratic representative. The sweatshirt was originally listed at 65 dollars, but has been discounted ever since.
“With $58.00 for a sweatshirt, you don’t tax the rich, you overtax the stupid,” said Darryl K. in a December 2 tweet in his response to Ocasio-Cortez.

“The sweatshirt ‘Tax the Rich’ cost 58 dollars. Holy S***,” said Twitter user CJW.
“Nothing says ‘I’m fighting for the little man’ more than to charge 65 dollars for a sweatshirt,” wrote Daniel Tobin.

In 2019, Ocasio-Cortez proposed a tax increase for multimillionaires to finance the progressive environmental plan, the Green New Deal, which was criticized by conservatives for costing nearly $93 trillion.
The representative pointed out that countries like Sweden already levy a 70 percent tax on people with incomes above $10 million.
The slogan “tax the rich” comes from the progressive Democrats’ proposal to increase taxes on top earners in the country to pay for social programs.
Others claimed that Ocasio-Cortez, who has been repeatedly labeled a socialist by conservatives for her progressive beliefs, is using capitalist tactics to sell her agenda.
“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is hypocritical scum. Women, wake up. Using capitalism to sell socialism is PEAK 2020 Democratic Energy,” said Twitter user Letsgetkraken.

Another Twitter user simply called the representative an “idiot” and compared the sweatshirts with “rags”.
“I have seen everything from IDIOT Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez! I’m sure people are lining up for your RAGS,” wrote Les_Med.

The Democratic representative confirmed in a tweet on December 2 that all her goods were produced ethically, which could be the reason for the high price of the sweatshirt.
“As always manufactured in the United States, with decent, unionized jobs that pay living wages,” wrote Ocasio-Cortez in a response to the listed goods.
According to the Ocasio-Cortez campaign website, “100% of our products are proudly manufactured and unionized in the U.S.”. However, the purchases made on the website contribute to the Ocasio-Cortez campaign.
Others also went on Twitter and argued in support of the representative who claimed that the high price was the standard for ethical clothing in the U.S.
“$65 is a standard price for a garment from an ethical source,” the Twitter user said screaming into the void.

“These were made in the U.S. by unionized workers who receive a living wage, which sounds to me like support for the little guy,” Brubo wrote.

Ocasio-Cortez did not respond in time for publication to Washington Newsday’s request for a comment.
