Progressive Jewish organizations defend Ilhan Omar after her controversial remarks about Israel and the United States.
Progressive Jewish organizations have defended Representative Ilhan Omar after she was chastised for comparing the “atrocities” perpetrated by extremist groups Hamas and the Taliban to those perpetrated by Israel and the United States.
On Monday, Omar uploaded a video of herself confronting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the US government’s persistent hostility to ICC investigations into potential war crimes. With the video, Omar remarked on Twitter, “We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity.”
“We have witnessed unspeakable horrors perpetrated by the United States, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban,” she added.
On Wednesday, a group of Jewish House Democrats issued a statement urging Omar to “clarify” her remarks. They claimed that comparing the US and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban is both provocative and misguided. Democrats claimed that Omar’s comments revealed “deep-seated prejudice.”
Several Republicans turned to social media to condemn Omar, with some advocating for her removal from the House Foreign Affairs Committee and implying that her criticism of Israel was antisemitic.
“Contrary to these out-of-touch politicians’ belief: condemning @IlhanMN for asking how the Israeli government will be held accountable for human rights violations outside of the ICC will do nothing for Jewish safety,” progressive Jewish group IfNotNow, which campaigns in support of Palestinians, tweeted in response to Omar’s criticisms.
The American Jewish community is not represented by the Jewish members of Congress who use Islamophobic tropes to slander @IlhanMN. They care more about defending Israeli occupation and apartheid than they do about ensuring Jewish safety and equal rights for Palestinians and Israelis.

“The Jewish members of Congress utilizing Islamophobic tropes to defame @IlhanMN do not represent the American Jewish community,” the organization added in a follow-up post on Thursday. They care more about defending Israeli occupation and apartheid than they do about ensuring Jewish safety and equal rights for Palestinians and Israelis.”
In a message on Wednesday, Jewish Voice for Peace Action, a progressive organisation, echoed Omar’s sentiments. The organization stated, “The US has done horrible horrors, actually.”
The US has. This is a condensed version of the information.
