Milli Vanilli’s genuine voice, John Davis, dies of Covid at the age of 66.

According to his family, John Davis, one of the genuine singers behind the lip-synching musical band Milli Vanilli, died of coronavirus last week at the age of 66.

Davis died on Monday in Nuremberg, Germany, where he had resided and performed for many years, according to his daughter Jasmin Davis.

In a Facebook statement, Ms Davis added, “We are so tremendously sad and grieved.”

Davis was credited with backing vocals but was actually a lead singer on Milli Vanilli records, whose meteoric rise was followed by an equally meteoric decline.

Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus received the 1989 Grammy Award for Best New Artist for their breakthrough single Girl You Know It’s True, as well as number one songs including Blame It On The Rain and Girl I’m Gonna Miss You.

When it was discovered that neither of them actually sung on Milli Vanilli songs, the group was stripped of its Grammy and dissolved months later. They reformed as Rob and Fab in 1991, but had little financial success.

Morvan and Pilatus faced legal hurdles, including a successful lawsuit from the 1960s band Blood, Sweat, and Tears, accusing them of copying the tune of Spinning Wheel for Girl You Know It’s True.

Davis, who was born in Anderson, South Carolina, spent much of his life in Germany after being stationed there with the US Army in the 1970s, according to an episode of The Hustle podcast released in April.

In the 1980s, he was working as a musician in the country when German music producer Frank Farian chose him to sing on a project for several times what he would have earned for a conventional singing gig, but he was unaware that others would lip-synch his songs, according to Ms Davis.

He alleged Farian had him come to the studio late at night to keep him away from the other artists.

I was sitting at home watching TV one evening when I saw Fab performing Girl I’m Gonna Miss You.

Davis informed the show that it wasn’t until later that he realized his voice was being misattributed to Morvan.
