Hecklers positioned themselves near the entrance of St. Joseph’s on Brandywine, the Catholic Church in Greenville, Delaware, where Joe Biden and his family are members of parliament, to protest the Democratic presidential candidate’s stance on abortion law on Sunday morning.
A photograph provided by Jennifer Epstein, a political reporter for Bloomberg News, Twitter, showed at least three people who participated in the affair holding signs with phrases like “No Catholic can vote for Joe Biden” and “No devout Catholic supports abortion.
Epstein published the first photo in the social media at about 10:45 ET. When Biden entered the church, presumably to attend Sunday mass, hecklers shouted “Repent for your soul” according to the reporter’s Twitter headline.
The hecklers reportedly shouted “Repent for Beau’s soul” and also seemed to confirm that Biden’s late son Beau is buried in the nearby church cemetery.
Beau Biden, a Democrat who served two consecutive terms as Delaware’s Attorney General after his election in 2006, died in May 2015 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 46 years old.
A little less than an hour later, at 11:30 am, Epstein added a video to the same Twitter thread. As Biden left the church grounds, two of the people who had gathered before St. Joseph called out, “Joe! You are a disgrace to the Catholic faith!”

Although Biden is a practicing Catholic, his position on Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that established a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion, has provoked fierce opposition from some public figures associated with the Church. President Donald Trump claimed on several occasions that a Biden Harris government would threaten religious expression in some way.
On Thursday, Lila Rose, the founder of the anti-abortion organization Live Action, insisted in a statement to Twitter that Biden could not simultaneously identify herself as a Catholic and support reproductive freedom. She suggested that doing so “is abhorrent and despicable” in the face of a biblical text that has spawned the church’s pro-life ideology. Rose’s statement resembled others published last week by various Catholic and conservative leaders of lobby groups.
You cannot claim to be a practicing Catholic and support the slaughter of children in the womb. To do so is abhorrent and despicable. And you cannot claim that you don’t know when your faith and your moral constitution tells you loud and clear: You shall not [email protected]

The most recent attack of criticism came shortly after the publication of a personal essay by Biden in the Christian Post, in which he discussed the influence of Catholicism on his personal decisions and his professional approach to politics. The essay focused on hatred, prejudice, and COVID-19 containment strategies, discussing each of them through the lens of Catholic teachings and specifically referring to those who call for unity in multiple ways.
“It has become too easy in recent years to define our neighbors as ‘others’ rather than as children of God and of America’s fellow men. This must stop. We must make greater efforts to come together and love our neighbors as ourselves,” Biden wrote. “That is the work to which we are all called by God.
