Four Florida teenagers are in jail and have been charged with attempted murder and burglary with assault after allegedly running over the mother of a romantic rival on Monday. The mother is reportedly hospitalized in critical condition and is unresponsive.
On Monday afternoon, 18-year-old Elijah Stansell, a 16-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl who will remain nameless due to their underage status, arrived at a teenager’s home to “handle” an ongoing romantic argument that, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, was not disclosed by police.
Three of the teenagers began “knocking” on the rival’s front door. The rival then came out of a side door and entered the carport of his house to see who was knocking. At that time, Stansell and the 16-year-old allegedly entered the rival’s house and physically attacked him, while the 14-year-old recorded this with her cell phone, according to an affidavit received from ClickOrlando.com.
When the rival’s mother suddenly arrived at home, the alleged attackers fled in their vans parked across the street. The mother then began using her cell phone to take pictures of the youths and their vehicle.
“Although there was plenty of room for the van to maneuver around her as she stood on the road, Stansell deliberately ran into her, then over her before fleeing the scene,” the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The attack was witnessed by several eyewitnesses and home surveillance videos that captured the attack and the hit-and-run. One witness, a Polk County utility worker, followed the van and called 911 to get the van’s license plate number and direction of travel. The van was stopped by the police shortly afterwards.
Records show that the mother is currently in critical condition and is unresponsive in the intensive care unit of a local hospital. She has suffered “a severe cerebral hemorrhage and a fractured skull, a broken leg, a ligament injury to her left knee” and a buildup of fluid in her lungs, ClickOrlando.com reports.
“This was a coordinated, planned attack carried out by a group of teenagers who beat up a teenager, then ran over his mother and left her for dead,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. “I can’t even imagine teenagers doing something so heinous. Our prayers are with this family,” said Grady Judd.
Stansell was incarcerated in Polk County jail, and the other three teenagers are in the county’s juvenile detention center.
