DHS Officer Tells Women in Florida ICE Center Line They Can’t Hand Out Water: Video

A video shows a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officer at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Miramar, Florida, barring women from handing out bottled water to individuals in queue.

The altercation took place at the ICE Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE-ERO) Center in the city. The police approached a disguised woman carrying a huge insulated bag full of chilled bottled water in the footage. He forbade her from delivering water to the folks waiting in line along the lawn on the sidewalk.

The officer informed the women, “This is federal land.” “You are not permitted to bring any water over here, even on the grass…. This is going to be rather straightforward, Ma’am. Trespassing charges will be filed against you. It’s because it’s government land. You guys don’t have authority to be here and distribute any goods.”

The officer directed the women to stand further away from the line in a “First Amendment area,” a designated zone for free expression. If anyone in line wanted water, he suggested they could walk over to the women and grab it themselves.

It was a scorching day, one woman stated to the officer. This week, local temperatures hit highs in the mid-80s, with high humidity making it feel even hotter.

“You’re doing a great job,” the masked woman told the officer just before the video’s end.

“Thank you, ma’am,” he responded. “I appreciate what you are trying to do, but you still have to follow the rules.”

Thomas Kennedy, Florida state coordinator of United We Dream, an immigrant youth-led network, re-posted the video on Twitter. He wrote that the women had been handing water “to people waiting for hours under the Florida summer heat.”

“Next week, I’ll be passing out water and if these fascists want to make the arrest, we will see them in court,” he continued.
