Boris Johnson news – live: MPs back ‘draconian’ protest bill, which may disenfranchise Tory voters
Boris Johnson has been warned that if he chooses to impose required picture ID at polls, he risked “accidentally disenfranchising” a large number of the Tory supporters he needs in the north of England.
According to a new YouGov poll, the proposed new laws will have the greatest impact in the north of England, where one in every 14 persons lacks a sufficient form of photographic identity.
Labour, along with some prominent Tories and civil society organisations, has accused the government of attempting to “rig democracy” with the measures by employing “Trumpian tactics.”
Meanwhile, MPs approved on Monday for a “draconian” policing bill that would empower police to impose limitations based on noise and even prohibit single-person demonstrations.
Alistair Carmichael, the Liberal Democrats’ home affairs spokesman, warned that the rules will “undermine the proud British tradition of standing up for what we believe in while respecting the rights of others to do the same.”
