The deputy Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded on Sunday in the social media to the suggestion of Florida’s Senator Marco Rubio that “every socialist is a democrat”, pointing out inconsistencies in his assertion.
The Democratic congresswoman, who is currently campaigning for a second term as representative of New York’s 14th District, is a vocal advocate of policies – such as expanded access to health care – that associate prominent Republican figures like Rubio with “socialist” principles.
Rubio has been a senator in Florida since 2011 and is a former Republican presidential candidate. He has spoken publicly about his opposition to “democratic socialism”, as Ocasio-Cortez and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders have described themselves several times. The senator shared his thoughts on Sunday about a relationship between socialism and the Democratic Party amid continuing allegations by President Donald Trump and other GOP leaders who mistakenly classify the Democratic Party’s political proposals as “socialist” positions.
“Not every Democrat is a socialist,” Rubio wrote on Twitter Sunday morning. “But every socialist is a democrat,” Rubio wrote on Twitter Sunday morning.
Ocasio-Cortez quickly responded to the Senator’s tweet with a message that disrupted his statement and challenged their claims.
“Curious to know what you call the GOP that gives away billions in public money to Wall St. & fossil fuel companies? OR what do you call YOUR ability to go to Walter Reed Hospital and receive free socialized medical care? Funny how it’s only ‘socialism’ when others get what you give to yourselves,” wrote the Congresswoman, rewriting Rubio’s Tweet.

Ocasio-Cortez also noted the differences between socialist and democratic political convictions in her subsequent tweet commentary. (“Even the idea that socialists like Dems…lol),” she added.
The Congresswoman underscored the hypocrisies inherent in Republicans’ fear of policies that they associate with Democratic socialism – which calls for greater participation of citizens in the systems they govern and a fairer distribution of social goods and opportunities. In March, as the New York Times reported, it noted that Republicans in the Senate were reluctant to increase pandemic aid for medical facilities, while at the same time pushing for multi-billion dollar bailouts on Wall Street.
Republicans often criticize socialist or Democratic-socialist ideologies, claiming that they promote increased government control and are therefore incompatible with the basic structure of the United States. Ocasio-Cortez supports several policies that link some Republican leaders to socialism, such as the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.
During a live Instagram discussion in 2019, the Congresswoman exposed general misconceptions about Democratic Socialism and its meaning.
“You can have free market economies with democratic socialist enterprises. What on earth is a democratic socialist enterprise? A perfect example is workers’ cooperatives … which means that … A ‘more democratic socialist’ company would have workers on the board of directors of the company instead of billionaires on the boards of public companies. This is really about democracy in the economy.
