After drawing Melania Trump comparisons, Jill Biden explains the ‘Love’ Jacket.
Jill Biden clarified the significance of her “Love” jacket, which she wore in the United Kingdom on Thursday ahead of the G7 Summit, after it drew similarities to an outfit Melania Trump wore during the previous administration while on a vacation.
The first lady donned a black jacket over her black-and-white polka dot dress with the word “Love” embroidered on the back during President Joe Biden’s meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Cornwall, England, on Thursday.
The jacket was immediately compared to one worn by Melania Trump, the former first lady, on a visit to a migrant children holding center in Texas near the US/Mexico border in 2018. Some speculated that the jacket was a dig at Trump, while others simply noted the tone difference.
Due to the sensitive nature of her trip, Trump’s jacket was imprinted with the words “I really don’t care, do u?” on the back, which caused confusion among critics. Her travel coincided with the signing of an executive order by then-President Donald Trump prohibiting the separation of children from their parents at the border. More than 2,300 children had been separated from their families as a result of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy at the time.
The jacket, according to Trump’s spokeswoman, was aimed at journalists and not a remark on the border issue.
After Jill Biden’s jacket generated a commotion on Thursday, reporters questioned the first lady about the significance of her dress choice.

She explained, “We’re bringing love from America.” “This is a worldwide conference, and we are attempting to create unity across the globe, which I believe is really required right now, for people to have a feeling of togetherness from all countries and a sense of optimism after this epidemic year.”
