SPD leader Norbert Walter-Borjans has called for rapid support for refugees in Greece. Walter-Borjans demanded on Deutschlandfunk radio that about a thousand unaccompanied minors be taken from the refugee camps on the Aegean islands. “It is about now”, the SPD politician emphasized. The European Union must not stand by and watch children die.

Walter-Borjans is therefore counting on a pan-European involvement. At the same time, he emphasized: “We will not let people die, if this solution cannot be achieved quickly, then Germany must act, especially when SPD-led states and many municipalities have declared their willingness to take in this manageable number of people”.

Previously, the FDP pleaded for a renewed EU-Turkey refugee agreement. In addition, the FDP is in favour of accepting children from refugee camps on the Greek islands. This is stated in a joint letter by FDP leader Christian Lindner and North Rhine-Westphalian Integration Minister Joachim Stamp (FDP) to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).
