The undefeated UFC superstar Nurmagomedov ends his career surprisingly. He had promised his mother. Without his father and at the same time long-time coach he would not return to the cage. He had died in July.
Martial arts superstar Khabib Nurmagomedov surprisingly announced the end of his career right after defending his lightweight title at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In Abu Dhabi, the 32-year-old Russian forced Justin Gaethje to retire in the second round on Saturday night. Already in the first round Nurmagomedow had his American opponent on the brink of defeat. For him it was the 29th victory in the 29th duel.
After the decision, Nurmagomedov got down on his knees, held his hands in front of his face and wept. “This was my last fight. I will not return to the ring without my father,” he said in an emotional speech. “I promised my mother that it would be my last fight. And if I give my word, I must keep it.” Nurmagomedow’s father, who had been his coach for years, died in July from corona infection.
The last thing Khabib Nurmagomedov had talked about was a possible fight against UFC star Georges St-Pierre.
