The translator of the Asterix comics has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. Gudrun Penndorf from Unterföhring received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in Munich on Tuesday.
Through her translation, she had made the French picture stories an “educational experience”, explained Bavaria’s Minister of Art, Bernd Sibler, at the award ceremony. “Her virtuoso use of puns is still being praised today, her translational achievements are outstanding and can hardly be surpassed in their broad impact”, the CSU politician said.
The 82-year-old has translated 29 Asterix volumes into German and other comics such as Lucky Luke and Disney’s Funny Paperbacks. The trained interpreter was also honored for her years as a lecturer who worked on the integration of migrant women in Munich.
According to the Egmont Ehapa publishing house, which published the books translated by Penndorf, this is the first time a comic translator has received the high state award. According to the publisher, Penndorf said that this was “a wonderful enhancement of the text type comics”.
