As the pre-season schedule unfolds, Liverpool is in talks with Aston Villa and Newcastle United.
As part of their pre-season preparations, Liverpool are planning an Anfield friendly against either Aston Villa or Newcastle United.
The Reds are eager to play top-flight opposition before the Premier League season begins on August 14 with a trip to Norwich City, who were promoted from the Championship last season.
There had been discussions with Osasuna of Spain about a match at Anfield, but issues with an overseas team being allowed into England at the moment scuttled any such plans.
Instead, Liverpool is looking into scheduling at least one match against a Premier League team ahead of the new season.
As part of their pre-season preparations, they are hoping to host Villa or Newcastle in early August.
Liverpool wanted to avoid playing any Premier League teams in the early stages of the season, and with games against Villa and Newcastle not planned until December, they were regarded perfect opponents.
The Reds had previously considered a summer double-header against Manchester United, which was eventually reduced to a single match at Old Trafford.
It was arranged in principle until the friendly was canceled due to developments surrounding the teams’ postponed Premier League match in May.
On July 12, the majority of Liverpool’s squad will report for pre-season training, while those who competed in Euro 2020 or the Copa America will be given additional time off.
This summer, Jurgen Klopp will take his squad abroad for a training camp, which will include a handful of friendlies. Austria, Spain, Portugal, and France are all being considered as potential locations.
