One lane was closed at junction 20 on the westbound lane after the emergency services received reports of an accident at 8.30 a.m.
An accident involving three vehicles on the M62 led to traffic congestion for miles.
Emergency services were called at 8.30 a.m. to receive reports of the collision, which caused long traffic jams.
Police, ambulance and fire department were called to the crash near Birch Services and remained at the scene of the accident, clearing debris.
A police spokesman said there were only minor injuries at the scene.
Initially it was reported that six cars were involved in the accident, but the North West Motorway Police (NWMP) later confirmed that three vehicles were involved.
In a tweet, the NWMP said: “Update: M62 Junction 20 to J19 Westbound Birch Services Highways and police remain on the scene to remove the wreckage Only minor injuries.
All lanes have now been reopened, but there are delays for drivers.
The Northwest Rescue Service has been contacted by ECHO for further information.
Highways England later added: “#M62 westbound at #J20 (#ThornhamIsland #A627M) Update: This incident has been cleared and all lanes have been opened
