After the transfer of Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool supporters weigh in on Joel Matip’s future.
Despite his injury problems and the arrival of Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool fans believe the club should keep Joel Matip next season.
After joining on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016, Matip has shown to be a superb purchase for the club, helping the Reds win both the Champions League and the Premier League.
Last season, long-term injuries to both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez gave Matip the chance to take over as Liverpool’s temporary first-choice centre-back, but the 29-year-old was also injured for the bulk of the season.
The injury troubles of the Cameroonian defender continue to be a source of concern, and Liverpool strengthened their ranks by signing Konate from RB Leipzig for £35 million.
In the centre-back position, Konate will join Gomez, Matip, and Van Dijk, as well as Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams, and many supporters expect those numbers to be reduced in the summer.
Despite his fitness problems, Liverpool fans do not believe Matip should be sold.
“What should Liverpool do with Joel Matip this summer with the purchase of Ibrahima Konate and the resurgence of Nat Phillips?” the ECHO asked supporters on Twitter.
The defender’s services should be retained, according to 59% of the 3,071 respondents.
Liverpool would be better served, according to 41% of respondents, if Matip could depart in the summer.
Matip was making progress since returning from injury in April, but he was unable to feature in any of Liverpool’s final games, as the Reds finished third.
The defender has been allocated to a specialized rehabilitation regimen in order to help him avoid the nagging injuries that have dogged his Liverpool career.
Matip, along with Gomez and Van Dijk, will be available for the entire preseason, according to Jurgen Klopp.
