With no console-to-PC crossplay or a release date, ‘Apex Legends Mobile’ has been revealed.

Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends Mobile has been officially revealed, but fans can temper their hopes for the forthcoming Android and iOS version. While Respawn’s blog post indicates that much of the standard Apex experience will soon be ported to the small screen in your pocket, it appears that this will come with a few more compromises than some fans might anticipate.

Apex Legends Mobile is “specially built for mobile devices, with streamlined controls for touchscreens and thoughtful optimizations that result in the most advanced battle royale gameplay available on a phone,” according to studio director Chad Grenier, despite the fact that it is still being produced by the Respawn team that created the game’s original versions. It’s a modern iteration of Apex Legends, but it’s still the same game.”

In other words, with Apex Legends Mobile, Respawn will not be following in the footsteps of Epic Games, which offers full synchronicity and crossplay across all Fortnite versions. Instead, the Apex Legends app will be something more like Tencent’s PUBG Mobile, a free, mobile-only version of PUBG that has only sporadic links to the main game but still has its own content. Since Apex Legends Mobile will not be able to compete with the PC or console versions of the game, the app will have its own Battle Pass with exclusive rewards. Apex Legends Mobile, like its big-screen counterparts, will be free to play.

Perhaps more unfortunate than the lack of crossplay is the fact that large groups of players will have to wait a long time to try Apex Legends Mobile. Respawn revealed in the source post that it would begin testing the game this spring with a few thousand Android closed beta testers in India and the Philippines. Following the completion of those tests, the software will be gradually rolled out for testing in additional markets and on iOS devices. Other areas, such as the United States and Europe, were not given a release window or a testing date, so most of our readers will have to wait patiently for those information.

Today’s Apex Legends Mobile reveal comes just in time for Apex Legends Season’s upcoming launch. This is a condensed version of the information.
