The Character of Julia Louis-Dreyfus in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ Explained

Fans of Disney+ and Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series are treated to a surprise cameo in the penultimate episode.

In the fifth episode of the miniseries, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) made a surprise appearance, and her character’s arrival may have major consequences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ll go over her part in the comic books, but there will be spoilers for Episode 5 of The Falcon and the Winter Solider because we’ll be talking about the plot of the show.

Oh, and keep an eye out for a post-credits scene while you’re watching the show.

IN THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, WHO IS JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS?

Falcon and Winter Soldier take away John Walker’s (Wyatt Russel) shield after the graphic and violent events at the end of Episode 4. The US government then strips him of his responsibilities and rank, but in Episode 5, he is confronted by a mysterious woman.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes an appearance and takes a seat next to Walker. She goes by the name La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, but you can only think of her as Val.

Marvel Comics fans may be familiar with the name and character as a major superspy in the Marvel Universe. Valentina was created by John Steranko in the 1960s and debuted alongside Nick Fury as a SHIELD agent.

Valentina was a skilled combatant and espionage master, which helped her rise through the ranks of SHIELD. During her time with SHIELD, she and Fury both became lovers. But, with spies, you never know where their real allegiances lie: La Contessa was really a double agent for Hydra, known as Madame Hydra, even though she was recruited to be a part of SHIELD.

She used her resources to infiltrate SHIELD to benefit Hydra, but, it turns out, Valentina was actually a triple agent. Well, actually, she was a sleeper agent for the Russian organization Leviathan, like her parents before her. Using SHIELD and Hydra, Valentina resurrected the organization Leviathan, whose sole purpose is world domination.

Those are her major plotlines in the comics, but she was also notable for heading up the SHIELD all-female group Femme Force.. This is a brief summary.
