Explains ‘Fortnite’ gold bars, bounties, quests and characters

The Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5 is finally here, and it has many new features, including gold bars, bounties and characters with custom quests. In this guide, we’ll show how these features work together to completely transform the Battle Royale experience.

What are the gold bars in Fortnite for?

Among the most obvious new features in Fortnite Season 5 is the currency of the gold bars. You can accumulate gold bars by finding them as ground loot, eliminating other players, or by completing quests or bounties for other characters. Unlike most other items added to your inventory in a particular Fortnite game, gold bars are transferred between games. If you put together a nice collection in one game, you can buy rewards for that effort in another game. So far we have seen that bars are awarded in stacks of 13 as ground loot, 35 for completing quests or a half-finished bounty, and 70 for a proper bounty elimination.

How to spend bars in Fortnite

Once you have about 50 bars in your inventory, you will have ample opportunity to spend them. Bars can be redeemed with one of 40 different NPC characters scattered across the Battle Royale map. Each character has their own inventory with a unique advantage that can be purchased. For example, the retail sniffer dog sells a map for 50 wands, which briefly shows the locations of other characters nearby.

The Grim Reaper in a house west of Holly Hedges can help you upgrade your guns. Others allow you to recruit them as AI bodyguards. Simply search for the white chat bubble in any area to find a nearby character.

How to get more bars – quests and bounties

Now that you know the basics of bars and how to spend them, you probably want to get more. Beyond loot or eliminating other players the old-fashioned way, it’s best to accept quests or bounties from the above mentioned characters.

When you talk to a character, quests are indicated by the ! symbol. They can involve any number of tasks, such as collecting a certain number of elims in a game, or something as simple as ringing a doorbell until it breaks. You will normally receive 35 bars for completing the goal.

Bounties can be collected at characters by selecting the crosshair icon instead. Once you do this and confirm it by pressing the thumbs up button, you will be given the name of a specific target to be eliminated within the time limit shown on the screen. Draw your card and you will see that a yellow circle indicates the approximate position of your target. If you manage to eliminate your target player before the time runs out, you will receive 70 bars. If another player succeeds in eliminating your target, or if you eliminate another player’s target instead, you will receive 35 bars. Regardless of who takes the final blow, the bounty is registered as full.

In terms of bars, bounties and quests, Fortnite Season 5 offers a different taste than some Battle Royale fans may be used to. Regardless, all three features work together to create a system that is quite simple and rewarding once you understand how it works.

Fortnite is now available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC and Android.
