Calyrex is one of the few new Pokémon introduced in Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield, and its secrets are deeper than you might expect.
The new legendary Pokémon was introduced earlier this year when the Isle of Armor/Crown Tundra expansion pack was first announced, but apart from a few minor details like its typing and abilities, not much is known about it.
As you might expect, one of the stories of the Crown Tundra concerns Calyrex and all the mysteries that surround it. The story has a massive spoiler, so if you don’t want to be spoiled, we suggest you avert your eyes.
CALYREX MISSION
The mission, in which Calyrex is involved, starts after your Dynamax Adventure Tutorial, where you meet some of the most important secondary characters of the region, such as Peony.
When you have completed this, go to Peony’s base in Freezington where you will find a strange item on his table. He tells you that he’s using it as a pillow, but you realize that it might belong to the statue of a legendary Pokémon that’s outside. You take it and put it on the statue, which brings you Calyrex.
You enter a battle against Calyrex, and after you defeat it, the legendary Pokémon explains to you how it once had the power to grow vegetables for the people and bring in a rich harvest. But since the villagers stopped praising it and essentially forgot about it, its power has diminished.
After some quests in which you have to talk to the villagers about the history of Calyrex, you will have to find the mayor in the giant’s bed to learn more about the legend of the Pokémon. Here you will learn that Calyrex had a Pokémon steed and must find it again.
From there you have to buy carrot seeds from the villager in Freezington for eight dyire ore. You can buy these from Dynamax Adventures.
Once you have received the carrot seeds, you must make a choice. You can grow the carrot on the old graveyard (Ghost) or on the snow slide slope (Ice). This will determine the type of Pokémon steed.
After you grow the carrot, you must defeat the steed Pokémon Spectrier/Glastrier. Once you have done this, you will learn about a special item that helped Calyrex tame the steed. After talking to the Mayor and receiving this special item, you must meet Calyrex in the Crown Shine.
Then Calyrex finally tames the steed and it’s time for you to fight and catch it.
HOW TO CATCH CALYREX
In this new form Calyrex is very powerful. This legendary Pokémon comes into play at level 80 and differs in type and ability depending on which steed you choose.
If you choose Spectrier, Calyrex becomes a psychic and ghostly Pokémon. In this form, Calyrex gains two abilities, his normal unencumberedness and the ability of the horse. Spectrier’s ability is called “Grimmy Neigh”, which increases his special attack after winning a Pokémon.
Glastrier makes Calyrex a Psychic and Ice Pokémon with the Lightness and Cooling Neigh, an ability that increases Calyrex’s attack status once he has defeated a Pokémon.
Pokémon attacks include Clairvoyance, Dexterity, Giga Drain, and either Astral Barrier – a powerful special ghost-type attack – or Glastrier’s Signature Attack, which is a powerful ice-type physical attack.
As with catching legends in older generations, you must stock up on Poké Balls and be prepared to use status effects and destroy his health if you want to catch him. You can also use the Master Ball that Peony gives you at the beginning of your journey to the Crown Tundra.
Once you catch Calyrex, you can keep him in full form or disarm him to have Calyrex and the steed as separate Pokémon. Go into your pocket and choose the reign of the unit. Use it on your Calyrex to separate the two. Note that you will need space in your group for this.
The Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield is now available for Nintendo Switch.
