As soon as you switch on and set up your Playstation 5 on November 12th, you should immediately dive into the pre-installed Astro’s Playroom from Sony. The game is a real treat that will take you on a captivating adventure with your DualSense controller. As you progress through the game’s levels, you’ll be taken on a journey through PlayStation history, collecting items and hardware that are relevant to the company’s console line.
With Astro’s Playroom, you can dive right into the fictional inner life of the PS5, populated by adorable, tiny robots. Subtly called “Playstation Labo”, Playstation Labo is a hub filled with four main worlds that reflect different components of the hardware.
This game is an ode to the best parts of the DualSense controller. It is amazing how so many small effects working in tandem can really contribute to the overall gaming experience. Each of the four main worlds, Cooling Springs, GPU Jungle, Memory Meadows, and SSD Speedway, consists of four levels that show a real demo of one of the unique features of the controller. Feel the pressure sensitivity of the haptic triggers as you squeeze the spring of your robotic frog suit that will take you where you need to go. When you blow into the microphone, some platforms are moved forward by a windmill. The touchpad allows you to “zip” into your suits and make your way through certain levels in ball shape.
The basic controls are very simple and intuitive, with a jump, double jump and attack scheme that should be familiar to both new and experienced players. Thankfully, it helps that you will feel the power of the DualSense just by simply crossing over. Simple effects such as the wind blowing at you or floating in the water will be felt through customized vibrations. In some moments you can even feel the gentle breaking of the ice beneath you. These small gestures are quite striking and contribute significantly to a haunting experience.
The levels have a wonderful, enchanting design that offers enough space to facilitate exploration as you journey through PlayStation history. Everything feels inviting, from the entry level Cooling Springs, where you whizz down a water slide causing a splash, to using a bow and arrow in the GPU jungle to attack your targets. Moving around in a tiny rocket during the Memory Meadows level is a real pleasure, as you can feel the intense rumble of the engines.
Although the experience is short, it provides enough content for players to collect and unlock. One of my favorite pieces is a claw game where you can use your coins to buy blind capsule balls containing puzzle pieces or small astro figures that you can add to your collection.
Astro’s Playroom is a wonderful introduction to your new system and its controller. It is unlikely that most future titles will offer the same experience for your DualSense that Astro offers, making it a must-play title.
