9 Terrifying Video Games That Will Shock You.
With Halloween just around the corner, you’re definitely looking for a few good scares and memorable horror encounters.
Your options are more restricted when it comes to video games than they are with, say, movies or literature, but The Washington Newsday has you covered with an expert list of the best the medium has to offer.
From interactive movies to first-person indies, PS2 classics, and even one entry that isn’t a full game, we’ve got it all. With titles that appeal to both scaredy-cats and the most desensitized of gore hunters, there should be something for everyone here.
With that in mind, here are 9 horror video games that will send shivers up your spine.
Until the Morning Light (2015)
Until Dawn is the least frightening film on this list in terms of scares, but it makes up for it with a lot of blood and guts. To get a sense of what to expect, imagine feeding an A.I. bot all of the generic adolescent slashers from the late 1990s, such as I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, and Halloween: H20, and then having it try to imitate them with its own screenplay.
The plot is extremely conventional (it features all of the stock characters, a predictable whodunnit mystery, and the stupidest tropes conceivable), but that’s kind of the idea. After all, the goal with Until Dawn isn’t to reinvent the genre, but rather to embrace its tropes and make you a part of them. “It’s a bloodstained love letter to every horror movie you’ve ever seen,” Gamesradar’s Louise Blain remarked. In terms of gameplay, you are in charge of making decisions for eight different people (one of them is played by Rami Malek), and it is totally up to you who lives and who dies. It’s similar to one of those choose-your-own-adventure stories like the Black Mirror: Bandersnatch special in this regard.
There are two distinct approaches to carrying out your responsibilities. On the one hand, you can be a cruel puppet master, making all the incorrect decisions that would ensure adolescent deaths, such as encouraging the teens. This is a condensed version of the information.
