With a 2-0 victory over FC Midtjylland on Tuesday evening, the Reds continued their perfect start to the 2020/21 season.
Rio Ferdinand believes that Liverpool is more focused on winning the UEFA Champions League this season than Manchester City.
After their 2-0 win over FC Midtjylland on Tuesday evening, the Reds took six points from their first two Group D matches.
After Jurgen Klopp’s team was eliminated from the Champions League last season in the first knockout round against Atletico Madrid, they are determined to reach the final phase of the competition this season.
Goals from Diogo Jota and a late Mohamed Salah brought them six out of six points in Group D despite an unpleasant evening in Anfield.
“I don’t think so. I don’t think you (Gary Lineker) are right,” he told BT Sport.
The Reds reached the back-to-back finals in 2018 and 2019, and in the latter won the trophy against Tottenham Hotspur and have a unique history in Europe.
Despite the absence of Virgil van Dijk, Ferdinand is convinced that Liverpool is one of the favourites to win the competition, alongside current defending champions Bayern Munich and ahead of Manchester City and Manchester United.
“I don’t think Manchester United are among the teams we could make the favorites. I think they will do well to get out of the group. Consistency is the key to United and improvement.”
“I want to watch exciting football, and when City flies, it’s exciting to watch them. Whether they will have enough to get over the line with the quality and consistency of Bayern Munich and Liverpool, I still feel that they are a stronger team, I have probably put City in the third or fourth choice for me.
