Michael Owen explains why Liverpool should not worry about the absence of Virgil van Dijk.

After his knee injury in the Merseyside derby against Everton, the inspirational defender will miss most, if not all, of the campaign and will have to undergo surgery.

Michael Owen believes that Liverpool can still have a successful season despite Virgil van Dijk’s injury.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is likely to miss most of the season after his injury against Everton.

Owen disagreed, arguing that Liverpool should be the favorite for the competition and that despite the absence of V an Dijk, their team remains strong enough to fight for titles.

Speaking to BT Sport, Rio Ferdinand said Jurgen Klopp’s team was still one of the most feared teams in Europe, but that Bayern Munich was probably the favourite.

This has prompted many to speculate whether the Reds will be able to maintain the sensational form of the last two seasons, in which they won both the Champions League and the Premier League.

“Because in my eyes there is no doubt that he is the best central defender in the world. You will miss that.

“I think they can,” said Owen when asked if they can still have a successful campaign. “I think that many people – rightly – think Is this the season it’s falling apart now?

“It’s not just for a few months, it looks like a season.

“His presence is reassuring, everything about him is first class and it’s a hard blow.

“But once the dust settles and you’re out of the way tonight, you suddenly start looking at them and thinking that they still have some amazing players.

“I think Bayern Munich will look at Liverpool and think that they are the team to beat. I think they were the best team in Europe for the last two seasons.

He added: “I agree with Rio, I would probably even take them one step higher….
