The head of the Reds currently has a serious problem at the heart of his defence as Fabinho has now been put on the list of injured central defenders in Liverpool.
Jamie Carragher believes that Rhys Williams will be able to provide Liverpool with “great performances from the air” and this is something that Fabinho and Joe Gomez “cannot give” to Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Williams could regularly play for Liverpool in the coming weeks – and Fabinho will now be added to Jurgen Klopp’s list of injured central defenders.
Klopp’s team is already without Virgil van Dijk, after the Dutchman suffered a long-term injury in the Merseyside derby against Everton, while Joel Matip’s lack of availability and Dejan Lovren’s departure for Zenit St. Petersburg this summer have left the Reds shortly behind.
The Brazilian, who normally plays in central midfield, suffered a hamstring problem against Midtjylland FC on Tuesday night and was replaced by Williams in the first half.
“This is a big problem for Liverpool,” the Kop icon told CBS. “Matip was on the edge of his seat at this game. I’m not sure he will come back for West Ham.
With Liverpool’s growing injury list, Williams could make regular appearances in the coming weeks if the Reds are to continue their impressive form.
And although Williams has hardly played for Liverpool’s senior team, Carragher believes the youngster has the qualities to fill the gap in the back.
“I think everyone will keep their fingers crossed that Matip will be back in the game this weekend for West Ham.
“Young Rhys Williams came back and did really well tonight. What he gives you is a great size and great aerial acrobatics that Fabinho or Joe Gomez won’t give you.
“Then maybe the game against Atlanta is not so important because Liverpool got off to a great start. Then the game against Manchester City is next, and that’s huge.” ..
