Digne received a red card in the 72nd minute of play for a foul by Kyle Walker-Peters.
Gary Lineker blasted the decision to send Everton’s defender Lucas Digne off the field during the Premier League defeat at Southampton with a foul.
The French defender was sent off in Sunday’s Premier League duel against Southampton.
Digne professed his innocence, but referee Kevin Friend gave him his marching orders.
The Frenchman caught Walker-Peters with his cleats on the back of his foot as he chased the former Tottenham man.
Lineker replied, “Total accident, so he raised his hands. Not reckless, not out of control.”
“Running after someone and accidentally stepping on their heel should never be a Red,” tweeted former Everton striker Lineker. “Can’t you run after people anymore?”
Former Swansea City frontman Lee Trundle replied, “He put his hands up before he stood on him, Gary, if it’s an accident, you don’t know if you’re going to do it before it happens.
James Ward-Prowse opened the scoring for the Saints in the 27th minute at St. Mary’s. Che Adams then doubled the home team’s lead 10 minutes before the half-time break.
Everton was already 2-0 down at the time of the dismissal when the unbeaten start to the campaign came to an end.
