Chris Merrie, a midfielder from Wigan Athletic, has joined Tranmere Rovers for an unknown amount.

The 22-year-old turned rejected a new contract at Latics in order to become Micky Mellon’s second summer signing on a two-year agreement.

Merrie appeared 31 times for Wigan last season, according to the club’s website, and Mellon said of Merrie, “Chris is a genuinely talented youngster.” He’s a player I’m familiar with, and the staff and I are excited to work with him.

“We’re trying to develop a midfield around Jay Spearing’s skills, as well as someone to play ahead of Jay and get engaged in all of the action.

“Chris, too, has the desire to reclaim the ball. Last season, he was a regular for Wigan Athletic, a fantastic football team. He has a strong pedigree and has previously played in a higher division.”

Soon after, Rovers confirmed the signing of defender Nat Knight-Percival on a one-year agreement.

At Shrewsbury Town, Knight-Percival worked under Mellon and helped the club gain promotion to League One in 2015.

Mellon remarked, “I know Nat better than any other player I’ve ever worked with.” “I’ve shared some incredible moments with him and am familiar with his personality.

“Having a left-sided centre-back to balance out the team is fantastic. It’s something I’ve tried to achieve at every place where I’ve worked.”
