Brunson Ankle Scare Forces Knicks to Adjust on the Fly

The New York Knicks were dealt a sudden blow Wednesday night in Sacramento when star guard Jalen Brunson exited early with a right ankle injury, forcing the team into an improvised backcourt rotation and casting uncertainty over their short-term outlook as the season intensifies.

    Non-Contact Injury Alters Game Flow

Brunson went down just minutes into the first quarter of the Knicks’ road game against the Sacramento Kings on January 14, 2026. With 7:45 remaining in the opening period, he awkwardly twisted his right ankle near the three-point line while dribbling in open space, with no defender involved. The non-contact nature of the injury immediately raised concern.

Despite the scare, Brunson stayed on briefly, scoring twice on a floater and a layup before visibly favoring the ankle. Moments later, he headed to the locker room as New York trailed 16-8, and the atmosphere inside the arena shifted noticeably.

A television commentator summed up the moment succinctly, noting that it was “just on his own little tweak,” an observation that mirrored the unease on the Knicks’ bench. The team soon announced Brunson was questionable to return, but he was ultimately ruled out after logging just five minutes and four points.

Knicks Scramble as Bigger Questions Emerge

Without their primary playmaker, the Knicks struggled to find offensive cohesion. They fell behind 32-17 by the end of the first quarter and trailed 56-42 at halftime, shooting only 31.9 percent from the field in the opening period as Sacramento took control.

Head coach Mike Brown leaned on reserve guards Miles McBride and Tyler Kolek to steady the backcourt. McBride, averaging 12.7 points per game while shooting 45 percent from three this season, assumed primary ball-handling duties. Kolek also saw extended minutes and replaced Brunson in the starting lineup after halftime. Jordan Clarkson and Deuce McBride likewise picked up additional run.

Even with efforts from Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart, New York lacked Brunson’s ability to break down defenses and orchestrate the offense. The Kings capitalized, building a double-digit lead the Knicks could not erase.

The injury adds to a growing pattern for Brunson. A similar right ankle sprain sidelined him for a month last season, and a Grade 1 sprain on the same ankle cost him two games in November. He also missed a December matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, though durability had otherwise been a positive this year, with Brunson appearing in 36 games.

Before Wednesday, Brunson was enjoying a career-best season, averaging 28.9 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 48 percent from the field and nearly 39 percent from three. The reigning NBA Clutch Player of the Year also ranked second in the league in first-quarter scoring at 10.2 points per period.

The Knicks entered the night 25-14, holding the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, but their form has cooled since winning the NBA Cup in Las Vegas. They are 7-7 since that triumph and just 2-5 over their last seven games, now sitting 3.5 games behind the conference-leading Detroit Pistons.

Brunson’s play has kept him near the top of Eastern Conference All-Star voting and in the MVP discussion, even after slipping to seventh on NBA.com’s latest MVP ladder. His health may prove pivotal as New York tries to stabilize after a recent 5-5 stretch.

Given the recurring nature of the ankle issue and the Knicks’ strong playoff position, the team is expected to proceed cautiously. As NBA journalist Jayesh Pagar noted, there is little incentive to rush their franchise guard back before he is fully healthy.

For now, the Knicks remain firmly in the postseason hunt, but the margin for error has narrowed. Updates on Brunson’s status will be closely watched, as his recovery could determine whether New York regains its momentum or faces a more turbulent road through the heart of the season.
