Aaron Ramsey misses Wales’ training session but claims he will be fit for the Euro 2020 opening.
Aaron Ramsey says missing training just over 48 hours before Wales’ Euro 2020 opener against Switzerland was a conscious decision.
Ramsey’s fitness has been a major source of concern for Wales, with the Juventus playmaker appearing in only 19 of Wales’ 44 games since reaching the Euro 2016 semi-finals.
The 30-year-old is short on game time ahead of Saturday’s match against Switzerland, but he says that Wales fans need not be frightened by his absence from the squad’s penultimate pre-game training session in Baku.
Ramsey explained, “It was arranged that I keep off my feet.”
“For the lads, it was a really light session. Everything is OK with me, and I’m looking forward to Saturday.”
Ramsey’s club career has also been affected by injury in the last two seasons.
Since joining Juventus from Arsenal in 2019, he has only started 24 league games, prompting him to place a greater emphasis on his personal fitness.
It was all part of the strategy for me to keep off my feet.
Ramsey added, “It’s been a hard time over the previous couple of seasons, but I’ve got my own team behind me who are dedicated on getting me in the greatest possible shape.”
“Football is a team sport that is primarily focused on the team. But it’s possible that some players require more care, so I’ve taken matters into my own hands.
“I have the appropriate people around me to help me devise the best strategy for getting back to a point where I feel good and confident.
“The Welsh staff and medical team have been fantastic, always willing to talk.
“It’s important to be on the same page. But I’ve known a lot of the Welsh staff for a long time, dating back to my Arsenal days, and they know what I’m talking about.
“They know my body, what I need, and hopefully we can all play a part to get myself in the best place.”
Last week, Ramsey came on as a 59th-minute replacement in a 3-0 friendly loss to France.
After that, he got an hour under his belt. (This is a brief piece.)
