Staff at a Southport restaurant have tested positive for Covid.

After staff members tested positive for Covid-19, a Southport eatery has shuttered its doors.

The town’s Hickory’s Smokehouse has voluntarily shuttered for “a few days,” citing increased covid rates in the area as another factor in the decision.

The fast-spreading variant cases currently found in the North West, according to bosses, also contributed to the closure, which was undertaken to guarantee the safety of workers and tourists.

“We haven’t taken this choice lightly, it’s been an immensely worrying time over the last year & we’ve been hit very hard, but the safety of our crew, our guests, and our community is so very vital to us all,” a spokeswoman wrote on Facebook.

“We believed it was the proper option to make after a dramatic jump in infection rates and a worryingly rapid rise in new Covid cases locally, along with new variations, and after a number of cases among our team.

“Please be assured that if it is judged essential, you will be alerted by NHS Track & Trace if you have dined with us in the recent few days and checked in via the NHS app or if you gave us your data when you came.

“We’ll contact you if you have a reservation in the following several days.

“Thank you so much for your support, and we hope to see you soon x”

According to the most recent NHS data, Sefton has had around 200 occurrences of the Delta variation since it was originally discovered.

Many of them, though, would have been discovered last month, when the borough had a modest, isolated surge in cases.

Since May 17, there has been an increase in cases across the Liverpool City Region, but Sefton remains the borough with the highest incidence of the new variety.
