Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson gave a fascinating insight into their respective roles in Liverpool’s recent success.

The former Manchester United defender received a fascinating insight into the role of Liverpool’s defender in Jürgen Klopp’s Premier League winning team.

Last season the pair contributed to 31 Premier League goals (through goals or assistance) as Liverpool ended their 30-year wait for the Premier League title.

When Ferdinand delved deep into the way Alexander-Arnold and Robertson took up the modern attacking position, he could only marvel at their adventurous attacking skills.

“There is Trent. Well, if this is Gary Neville in my era, I’m going to yell, “Get back in here” to make sure we stop the counterattack here. You become one of the defenders helping out in the back.

I show them a clip of them in action, Ferdinand said: “That’s you, Robbo, on the ball, take on your man, play and move and you end up on number nine.

“Listen, in my time this has never happened before.

“You, on the other hand, this is just incredible – ‘You go, and by the way, I’m going to go and join you’.”

Alexander-Arnold explained how they did it: “I think the main thing is that we go, we have to know that we have protection behind us.

Robertson added: “I think Gini (Wijnaldum) will jump in at the end as a left back, as I bring him in, Gini goes in.

“I think we have to be confident that Fab (Fabinho), Joe (Gomez) and Virg (Virgl van Dijk) can defend the three against three.

Alexander-Arnold continues: “The triangle there should be able to defend against a three and then Gini is filled in there.

“And Hendo (Jordan Henderson) lands on the right outer defender position.

“There should also be someone on the edge of the penalty area who is close enough to that wing to stop the counter-attack.

Robertson continued to build on her development as a player under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

“So if I’m there, there must be cover there. That can be either Joe, Fab or Hendo….
