Protests Erupt After Border Patrol Killing, City Faces Political Firestorm
Minneapolis is at the center of a national uproar following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by U.S. Border Patrol officers. Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and U.S. citizen, was killed during a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on January 21, 2026. The incident has sparked widespread protests, a historic citywide general strike, and severe political divisions, as both local and federal authorities clash over the event.
According to eyewitness videos analyzed by news outlets such as Bellingcat and NBC News, Pretti was documenting the protest when he attempted to intervene in an altercation involving an ICE agent pushing a woman to the ground. As Pretti moved forward, he was tackled by seven agents, pepper-sprayed, and beaten. Despite carrying a legally concealed firearm, video evidence indicates that Pretti did not use or brandish the weapon. Instead, he was holding his phone and raising his empty left hand in a defensive gesture.
The confrontation escalated when one of the officers, after removing the gun from Pretti’s waistband, shouted “gun.” Moments later, a federal agent fired a shot at Pretti, followed by nine additional shots. A thorough investigation by Bellingcat confirmed that Pretti’s gun never discharged, and it was the agents who opened fire. Pretti’s death is the second fatal shooting of a protester by federal agents in Minneapolis within weeks.
The Department of Homeland Security quickly framed the incident as an attempted attack on law enforcement, claiming Pretti had planned to “massacre” agents. President Donald Trump echoed this narrative, calling the firearm “dangerous and unpredictable.” However, independent analysts and Pretti’s family strongly rejected these claims, with his family issuing a statement condemning the false accusations and defending Pretti’s actions as non-threatening.
The death has thrown Minneapolis into chaos. On January 23, an unprecedented general strike brought the city to a standstill. Thousands of people, including labor unions, community groups, and religious organizations, rallied in the streets under the banner “Day of Truth
