Liverpool’s U23 side received a huge injury boost with the return of the striker against Arsenal.

The striker, who had missed the entire 2019/20 season due to an ACL injury, returned to the Reds in the preseason, but suffered a frustrating injury last month – which set him back.

Liverpool starlet Paul Glatzel had his first competitive appearance of the season when the U23 side won 1-0 in Premier League 2 on Friday night against Arsenal.

Liverpool’s U23 side secured a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the Premier League 2 on Friday night.

Tom Clayton scored the only goal of the game with an excellent goal from outside the penalty area just 15 minutes before half-time and helped the young Reds to another string of victories after their impressive win over Chelsea last weekend.

The 19-year-old did, however, overcome this latest obstacle and gave U23 boss Barry Lewtas a welcome boost when he was introduced just after the hour against the Gunners in place of Jack Bearne.

After the win, Lewtas told “It was an unlikely 1-0 victory for Tom Clayton!

Arsenal put together a strong team for the game, with a team like £27 million summer arrival William Saliba behind them, while Folarin Balogun, who made his European debut under Mikel Arteta on Thursday, also played.

“The boys were outstanding in the first half. Our pressure was really good and we created many opportunities.

“Fair play to Tom, it was an excellent finish and I was really pleased with him. He was outstanding again.

“We missed some guilty chances in the second half, but Arsenal didn’t really put our goal at risk, apart from making a brilliant block to keep the boys out.

“It was great to have Paul [Glatzel] back and give him a few minutes. He held the ball well and he offers us so much.

“We defended very well again and overall it was a good night.
