Is it expected of you to appear to be having a good time? The Queen’s remark demonstrates to the G7 leaders who is truly in charge.

“Are you expected to appear like you’re having fun?” the Queen has queried, a question that may be on the minds of every G7 world leader.

The Queen’s quip came as presidents and prime ministers smiled for the camera during a family photo following an evening reception. She is known for her humour, which she uses to put apprehensive guests at ease.

Following a day of political negotiations, three generations of the royal family came to welcome the leaders to Cornwall, demonstrating the monarchy’s “soft diplomacy.”

The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined the Queen at an open-air reception at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

William and Kate are attending their first G7 gatherings, marking another step forward in their careers as senior royals.

Many of the leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and US President Joe Biden, were photographed speaking with the royals, many with their spouses.

The monarchy does not have authority, but it wields influence and engages in “soft diplomacy” to help the United Kingdom renew and build ties with its allies and partners across the world.

They walked to an area to take a socially detached group portrait after the 40-minute reception, and after taking their seats and posing for a few moments, the Queen asked, “Are you meant to seem as if you’re enjoying yourself?”

eThe leaders gathered around the Queen chuckled, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson firmly stated, “Yes.”

“We have been enjoying ourselves – despite appearances,” said Mr Johnson, who is hosting the summit in Cornwall.

Mrs Merkel approached the Queen and expressed her gratitude for her willingness to pose for the photograph, saying, “Thank you for doing that for us.”
