Police and emergency teams were on the site, cordoning off an area near the Royal Albert Dock’s entrance.
At around 7.35 a.m., they were alerted to a report of a man’s body floating in the sea.
“Officers, Coastguard, and North West Ambulance Service attended, and the guy was retrieved from the sea,” a Merseyside Police spokesperson said.
“He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and regrettably died shortly after.”
“The death is not being viewed as suspicious, and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.”
