A man was sentenced to four months in prison for slapping President Macron in the face.
For hitting French President Emmanuel Macron in the face, a 28-year-old man was sentenced to four months in prison.
Damien Tarel was promptly apprehended following a swing that landed with an audible thwack on Mr Macron’s left cheek when he was greeting a crowd on Tuesday.
Tarel was found guilty of aggression against a person with public power by a court in Valence, in the south-eastern city of France, on Thursday.
He was sentenced to four months in prison with an additional 14-month suspended term, as well as a five-year prohibition on ever holding public office or possessing weapons.
Tarel identified himself as a “patriot” from the right-wing or extreme-right and a member of the yellow vest economic protest movement. As he attacked Mr Macron, he yelled a centuries-old royalist war cry.
