By now you have no doubt seen the video in social media or even been referred to Saturday Night Live: Joe Biden is standing on a podium and he takes out his phone to play something. The music sounds with the repeated sentence: “You About to Lose Yo Job”. The president-elect starts rocking his head before the screen cuts to Barack Obama, who seems to rise from the front row and starts dancing. Then we see others dancing to the song – Kamala Harris, the late John Lewis, Michelle Obama, Marianne Williamson, even Bernie Sanders comes in with a cheerful applause.
The video is of course a celebration of the Democrats celebrating the loss of Donald Trump’s job. But equally obvious is the fact that the clip was carefully stitched together before the election. The scenes look dramatically different, and Lewis died in July. Be that as it may, the mood hit the nerve of the time, and it was spread all over the Internet. However, many of those who share it either don’t know who made this crazy clip or have no interest in naming the author.
Filmmaker Alex Gibney, Mark Ruffalo and Stevie Van Zandt of E Street Band fame all posted the clip. Among the many other well-known social media users who shared the viral parody was How to become an anti-racist author Dr. Ibram X. Kendi was one of the few who named the source by publishing the original video of “Teri in New York”.

While “Teri in New York” put together the video, the roots of the song go back much further. DJ Suede and DJ iMarkkeyz are responsible for the month-long mix used in “Teri’s Democrats dance-along”. (DJ iMarkkeyz also did the “Coronavirus Remix”, a song that tops the charts and was inspired by a Cardi B video). There are also other versions of the song, including a popular remix by producer Eklektik, whose version is stylized as “You About to Lose Your Job”. (The one by Suede and iMarkkeyz is titled “Lose Yo Job”).
But the real author, or at least the inspiration behind the song, is Johnniqua Charles. Earlier this year, in the pre-pandemic month of February, Charles tried to re-enter a strip club in South Carolina after he discovered that she had left her purse in it. But instead of making it back in, she was arrested by a club security guard. After the two of them argued, Charles found himself handcuffed. Then she improvised and sang “Lose Yo Job”. With a cell phone that recorded the action, Charles started dancing and kept singing “you about to lose your job”. In June, it was a viral sensation with several remixes that were circulated in the social media, and Charles began singing “loseyojobgirl” on Instagram.
During the Black Lives Matters protests this summer, the singing/vocals even became a popular anthem directed at the police.
This weekend, Teri’s video of the song reached a big climax pretty quickly when Saturday Night Live worked the meme into its cold opening as Jim Carrey and Maya Rudolph (as Biden and Harris) broke out to dance while playing the tune.

In the meantime, Teri is still trying to get recognition for her contribution. After MSNBC referenced the video, she wrote on Twitter: “It’s so shady. It was my concept. I curated every clip, I spent the hours meticulously making sure that every gonorrhea was in time. Now everyone else uses my edit to insert their own song.”
That is so questionable. It was my concept. I curated each clip and spent the hours making a
