Who is Jean Currivan Trebek, Alex Trebek’s wife?

The death of Alex Trebek, the beloved host of Jeopardy! was announced on Sunday. He leaves behind his wife, Jean Currivan Trebek.

Jean Currivan is a professional sound healer, Reiki Master, religious studies practitioner and native New Yorker. She is married to Alex since 1990. The two met in 1988 at a party in New York and got along right away despite their age difference of 24 years.

Jean is the mother of Alex’ two children, Matthew and Emily Trebek.

Alex Trebek was previously married to Elaine Callei Trebek, but they divorced in 1981 after seven years. Alex adopted Elaine’s daughter Nicky while they were married.

During the recent ABC interview special What Is Jeopardy! Alex Trebek and America’s most popular quiz show, the 79-year-old who fought stage 4 pancreatic cancer said his time on Jeopardy! could come to an end as he prepares for another round of cancer treatment.

Jean, who also appeared on the Special What Is Jeopardy!?, admitted that the hardest thing to do was to see Alex “in pain and I can’t help him”.

In her first interview since Alex’s cancer diagnosis at the time, Jean explained how her sound healing and religious studies practice has helped her stay upright during the dangers to her family, which in turn helps keep her husband in good spirits.

“It comes from a place of love, because I want to lift him up… and if I keep myself going and enjoy my life, I can actually share that with him. He can look at me and have a sense of ‘life is beautiful, my wife is doing something good’,” she told SurviviorNet in November 2019.

Alex had previously praised his wife for her endless and unwavering support. In an interview with People magazine in 2019, the host of the game show said he regretted not meeting her earlier.

“I’m pretty happy with my life,” he said. “But my wife Jean and I have been together for almost 29 years, and I’ve been thinking about President [George H.W.] Bush when he died, and all the comments about his life, what a nice guy he is, and how he and his wife were together for 73 years. I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, if I hadn’t met Jean until I was 20, we could have had a longer life together’.

He added: “If I had met her at 20, she probably wouldn’t have been born yet. But hey, 29 years is pretty good.”
