The growing numbers of new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, both in the United States and around the world, signify the return of an infectious pandemic that has already claimed more than 220,000 lives in the United States and 1.1 million lives worldwide.
The U.S. saw a record 77,640 new cases on Thursday, eclipsing the previous high point of 75,723 in late July, as well as 921 associated fatalities, according to NBC News.
