Group C finally got their time on Wednesday to shine in the fifth episode of the 4th season of The Masked Singer, but as exciting as the night of performances was, not everyone was able to stand up to the competition.
Squiggly Monster, Mushroom, Jellyfish, Broccoli and Lips put on quite a show on their debut as Masked Singer, but it was Lips who had to drop out in the end.
The contestant wore a big costume with a pair of red sparkling lips and delivered a funny and energetic cover version of the Odyssey hit “Native New Yorker”. Although Lips was a pretty enthusiastic performer, he was not a singer. She could hardly hold a note. However, it was quite entertaining to watch her, especially at the end of her performance, when she burst out laughing and gave a snort. “Oops,” she giggled.
Panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke enjoyed watching Lips reign over the stage.
“I love you, Lips, because you never apologize. You are alive. You say, ‘I don’t even care about the grades, honey. I’m living here only in my truth. I love that you had such a good time,” said Scherzinger.
McCarthy agreed with McCarthy that Lips gave quite a performance.
“That’s what the show is about: people stepping out of their comfort zone. I thought she was fun and did an amazing job,” she said.
Based on Lips’ tip sheet, the panelists had some pretty good ideas about who the celebrity was who was hiding behind the mask. All the neon lights, roller skates and disco pictures from the 1970s scattered around Lips’ clue pack made Thicke think that Sandra Bernhard was the one posing behind the mask, while all the comments about her telling the truth and having a big mouth gave McCarthy and Scherzinger the impression that it could have been Wendy Williams who was the fourth season contestant.
For his first hunch, Jeong suggested that it could have been Nick Cannon’s ex-wife, Mariah Carey – which is ridiculous considering Lips didn’t do such a great job singing – but he switched his hunch to Allison Janney.
Lips shocked everyone when she took off her mask and proved that McCarthy and Scherzinger were right – it’s Wendy Williams.
“I can’t sing. I can’t dance, but I know how to have fun,” Williams said about her desire to come on the show.
While everyone was shocked by the big revelation, Cannon was especially surprised, especially considering that he had a long phone conversation with Williams recently, just a few days before her performance.
“Nick, we’ve been on the phone for quite a while,” said Williams. “We talked about mature, grown-up stuff.”
Along with Williams, Mark Sanchez, Brian Austin Green, Mickey Rourke, and Busta Rhymes have so far dropped out of season 4 of The Masked Singer.
The Masked Singer will air on Wednesdays at 20.00 ET on Fox.
