Season 5 of This Is Us is about the story of Randall Pearsons (played by Sterling K. Brown) biological mother after the shock at the beginning of the season revealed that she did not die shortly after giving birth. Now the NBC show has given us a first clue as to what life was like for Laurel (Jennifer C. Holmes) after the birth of her son.
In This Is Us Season 5, Episode 3, soon to be released on the NBC website and in the App and Peacock, we kept returning to a Vietnamese man (played by Vien Hong) who is fishing with his granddaughter (Brandilyn Cheah). In the episodes called “Changes” we get three scenes with this couple, how they fish and then prepare the fish to “impress someone very special”.
In the third scene he finally tells his curious daughter who exactly the dinner is for. She says it is for “the woman in all the pictures” in his house. Then the camera pans to reveal the man when he is younger with a woman. That woman was Laurel, Randall’s birth mother.
This gives us a big clue as to what Laurel has been doing since she left her partner and her little son. It seems that she spent some time in Vietnam with this fisherman. And obviously they spent a considerable amount of time together, because the man kept photos of her all the time.
However, there are two major gaps in our timeline: Exactly what Laurel was between her time with a younger version of this man and her return to this fish dinner. Because since this man’s granddaughter does not know who this woman is, she has obviously disappeared from his life for some time.
In later episodes, the series’ creator also teased flashbacks to the time before Laurel met Randall’s biological father, Wlliam (Ron Cephas Jones). Before This Is Us Season 5 began, creator Dan Fogelman told journalists that the series would reveal who Laurel was “long before that moment, long before she met William.
Laurel’s appearance in Vietnam also suggests that we could see a new side to the country after learning about Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Ncky’s (Griffin Dunne) experiences in the war there in This Is Us Season 3.
This visit to Vietnam comes after a note from Sterling K. Brown in Entertainment Weekly: “We will add another city to our repertoire. We will go somewhere else where it has something to do with Randall’s past and where he finds healing.
Meanwhile, the creator of This Is Us, Dan Fogelman, said: “There are definitely answers to the question: ‘Is it still alive in the present? And there are definitely answers to the question of what happened after this event of the past.
This Is Us Season 5 will be broadcast on Tuesdays at 21:00 ET / 20:00 CT on NBC….
