The Queen’s Gambit was a massive hit for Netflix around the world. According to the TV ratings aggregator FlixPatrol the chess drama Anya Taylor-Joy was the most watched series on the world’s streamers for the last seven days, and there seems to be no chance that it will leave the charts in the foreseeable future.
At this point in time, the chances of a series getting a season 2 would be pretty high, even in a climate where Netflix cancels many of its shows early. However, it is still very unlikely that we will see a season 2 of the Queen’s Gambit.
We know this because of the different names that Netflix and other TV stations give to their shows. Some shows are billed as regular series, which means they may be broadcast over several seasons, while some shows are billed as “limited series” or “mini-series,” which means they tell a self-contained story that is told over a limited number of episodes, usually over the course of a season.
Since The Queen’s Gambit is a limited series, this means that it is likely to be a series shot on Netflix. There is a reason for this – the chess drama is an adaptation of a novel by Walter Tevis, and the series tells the whole story. And since Tevis died in 1984, there is no chance for a follow-up book, from which the story of season 2 could be taken over.
Apart from that, the actors have expressed their willingness to return for the second season of The Queen’s Gambit, but in a very noncommittal way. Leading actress Anya Taylor-Joy, for example, told Town & Country: “If I’ve learned anything from my work in this industry, it’s that you never say never. I admire the character, and I would certainly come back if I was asked to, but I think we’re leaving Beth in a good place.
Although Taylor-Joy has said that she might come back in the unlikely situation that there is a season 2, it is hard to know when she will have time to do so. The hard-working actress has five upcoming projects, including Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho (expected in spring 2021), the spin-off of Mad Max Imperator Furiosa and The Northman, her reunion with Robert Eggers, the director whose film The Witch made her a breakout star.
The executive producer of The Queen’s Gambit, William Horberg, also seemed to rule out a second season in his Town & Country interview, saying, “The last scene feels like a nice note to end the show, so I’m not sure we want to answer that question any further. Maybe we can just let the audience imagine what comes next.
The Queen’s Gambit is now being broadcast on Netflix….
