Work is work and leisure is leisure – that’s the way it should be. But the reality often looks different. It is unhealthy, however, if the thoughts at home continue to revolve around the job. What helps? Simply switching off after work: For many people, this is easier said than done – and that can become a problem.

Stress is omnipresent in our fast-paced everyday life. The coronavirus pandemic has even increased the stress experienced by many people. Yet stress is anything but healthy and is involved in the development of numerous diseases. This makes it all the more important to provide sufficient relaxation. An expert gives tips on how this can be achieved.

Because the stress hormone Cortisol, which makes one during the work efficient, is not sufficiently diminished thereby, as Julia Krampitz of the German university for prevention and health management explains. It is not healthy in the long run if your thoughts constantly revolve around your work after work. Only who switches off, recovers. Fortunately, there are some tricks that help:

The first step to recovery is quite simple and may still cost some people to overcome – switch off the computer and smartphone and also do without a sound system via radio or TV. Switching off the computer and smartphone and also avoiding the sound system on the radio or TV will symbolically put you into a kind of sleep mode, taking the strain off your body and mind.

Stress hormone cortisol ensures constant peak performance

Put your smartphone in your pocket, put documents on the stack, shut down your computer, put on your jacket, say goodbye to colleagues. It helps to always end the working day in the same way. And to do it consciously. This ritual makes the mind understand that it is really the end of the workday.

Not only the job is stressful, but also everyday tasks such as bringing up children, cleaning or official channels can be stressful. That’s why it’s all the more important to take some time out to do something that really does you good – drink a cup of your favorite coffee or take a bath in peace. After all, you also need self-care to be able to switch off. (vb; source dpa/tmn)
