Andreas Gruel is a famous chef and former star of the Food Truck Face Off of Food Network. He is also not a fan of Gavin Newsom, especially when it comes to the governor’s handling of the ongoing pandemic in California.
Slapfish, the founder, CEO and head chef of the Slapfish seafood restaurant in Huntington Beach, California, has spoken out loud about his concerns with Newsom’s recent restrictions on businesses in the state. After numerous tweets, he presented his full thoughts on restaurant closures in a video in which he openly resisted the closure and stated that he plans to keep the Slapfish restaurant open for outdoor dining. He also pointedly said: “I am not an a**hole, I am the governor.

“Okay, I have now blown up all my answers that say I am a grandmother killer and that we don’t take this pandemic seriously. So I’m going to address all of this here so that I don’t have to go back and forth and box with each and every one of these fake reports,” Gruel says at the beginning of the video, somewhat understated before gradually becoming more heated.
“So, this is the situation… Are we taking the pandemic seriously? Of course we take it seriously. Am I saying that we shouldn’t close down the outdoor dining area? Yes, I am saying that. At every single point along the way, from the first closure until now, we have listened to all the advice of our government officials, only to be closed again and again and then not be compensated for the elements we have put in place in our factories to protect our customers.
“We have closed the canteen. That was no problem. I have a warehouse full of Plexiglas at the moment. Everything okay? We went outside. All right? This is going to be shut down now. I just spent thousands of dollars on outdoor heaters.”
At that point, Gruel begins to show more frustration. He continues, “There is zero scientific evidence that outdoor eating contributes to the increase in related cases, all right? I’m just saying that we’re going to keep eating outdoors because I can get on a plane, I can fly and eat and do whatever I want – and don’t tell me it’s because of the HEPA filters, okay? Because that’s not the case. You only turn them on when you get on the plane. Before that, everybody fornicates with each other. I can go to WalMart. Hell, I don’t even have to wear pants. Nobody wears a mask at WalMart. I can get a pink cockatoo for my Christmas tree, but I can’t go eat outside in a restaurant.”
He notes that large companies like Target and Amazon, in addition to WalMart, are getting “rich” during the pandemic, while smaller companies, especially restaurants, are suffering.
The video, which comes in at just over a minute and a half, ends with Gruel, who concludes emphatically: “We’re staying open outside. It’s as simple as that. I am not an asshole, I am the governor.”
Elsewhere in his Twitter account, Gruel mockingly claimed that people should order as much pizza as possible before Newsom bans it, and continued to question the safety of airplanes from the spread of COVID-19.
When Newsom announced the new shutdown plans on Thursday, he said most regions of the state should be ordered “as early as the next day or two…as early as next week,” while the Bay Area region “may have a few extra days. Huntington Beach, Slapfish’s location, is along the Southern California coast in Orange County.
